Silk Trends finalist for Hair Salon of the Year London in English Hair and Beauty Awards

Spirits are high at East London Hair Salon Silk Trends, after being selected as one of top 5 finalists for the Hair Salon of the Year London category in the 2013 English Hair and Beauty Awards.  This is the second year in a row Silk Trends has be selected as a finalist in this prestigious awards, with Ingrid (Silk Trends Salon Director) being selected as a finalist last year in the Women’s Stylist of the Year 2012 category.

Hair Salon of the Year London is a highly sort after title, and Silk Trends are up against some heavyweights in the hairdressing industry, namely Headmasters of Mayfair (who were last year’s winners of this award).

Silk Trends was selected with the help of public votes, and received hundreds of votes from their loyal clients to help steer them through to the final stages of the competition.  The final stage consisted of submitting a presentation of supporting evidence which will be reviewed by a panel of high profile judges.

Ingrid said, ‘Last year we were in the top 13 which was great, but this year I cannot believe that we’re in the top 5! It’s a great honour in itself to be selected, but to be selected 2 years in a row, and in the top 5 is a huge huge achievement.  The competition first stage is by public vote, and it’s a wonderful feeling knowing that our clients voted for us, and think so highly of us and are so loyal.’  This nomination is proof that all our hard work is paying off and that Silk Trends isn’t just another conventional East London salon.

The English Hair and Beauty Awards is a prestigious annual event that pays homage to the professionals that work in the hair and beauty industry. The ceremony gives thanks and recognition to those who work exceptionally hard and promote high standards in the industry.  With a public voting system, the English Hair and Beauty Awards is very much a celebration of homegrown talent.

Ingrid said, ‘Being nominated last year was an unbelievable experience and we had an amazing time attending the ceremony.  We have all our fingers and toes crossed for winning the big prize, and i think I will be speechless on hearing our name called out as winner of the Hair Salon of the Year London 2013′. 

The Silk Trends team will now have to wait patiently until 3rd March to find out if they have won, where they will be attending the glitzy event held at the Midland Hotel, Manchester and hoping to bring home the main prize to East London.

As you all know here at Silk Trends we love a good success story, and boy have we got one for you guys!

However, this time we’re talking about our very own Creative Director, Ingrid Farrell.  Ingrid’s hair journey began back in November 2011 when our famous sought after Brazilian Keratin Treatment was performed on Ingrid’s hair for the first time.

Ingrid has always had a bit of trouble growing her hair and it has usually been quite thin, but with a bit of TLC and patience growth was achievable. Having tried many different ways to grow her hair in the past, the Silk Trends team decided (after careful consideration) that the only way forward was for Ingrid to have the Brazilian Keratin Treatment. After the treatment was performed back in 2011, Ingrid was able to experiment more with her hair, and decided to have fun with her locks, and bleached and coloured her hair to a gorgeous rich copper colour for the summer, something she had never been able to do before when her hair was either relaxed or just natural. With a little help from the Brazilian Keratin Treatment bleach and colour on afro hair became a safe reality not a dream.

After having had her summer of fun Ingrid decided that it was time to get serious about growing and thickening her hair, and practice what she preaches about taking as good care of her own hair as she does with all our clients. After much consideration she decided to go back to basics… Natural colour and healthy shiny LONG hair was her new goal.

Ingrid decided to put her hair in plaits her hair for several months, to give her hair a break from heat processing. Plaiting is not for everyone and depends on your lifestyle, and needs to be done with care as can sometimes damage and put pressure on your hair, especially around the hairline.  Ingrid would re-do sections of her plaits every couple of months to keep it tidy, and this was a good opportunity to give her hair regular moisturising treatments in between plaiting to help keep the hair hydrated (thirsty hair is a big no, no) and soft. This helped to promote hair growth too. And boy did Ingrid’s hair grow!  To an impressive length to say the least.  Jealousy was very abundant in salon that day.   

By the time it came to take out her plaits in February 2013 Ingrid’s hair had gone from chin length and being relatively thin, to thick and shoulder length.  The Silk Trends team then decided it was time for Ingrid to have a new dose of Brazilian Keratin Treatment, to help restore a healthy shine from previous colouring, lock in new colour, and give her smooth, frizz free and luxurious hair.

Despite what many people some think Brazilian Keratin Treatment is NOT a miracle relaxer/straightener, but in fact a sophisticated de-frizzing/smoothing system. Keratin is a substance naturally found in our hair, skin & nails. You must have bare natural afro hair (i.e. no braids/extensions currently in ) and must arrive with your hair already washed and ready to cornrow.

Recently here at Silk Trends we have had a number of transformations but the one that has stuck out the most happened to be a lovely young lady named Tamara with natural mixed textured hair.

When Tamara came to us, she gave us a pre warning telling us that almost every other hairdresser that she had been to had run away from her hair as it was so unruly and difficult to tame. Tamara also told us that she has to dedicate a whole day just to wash her locks and by the end of the process she’s too tired to bother with treatments, let alone anything else so she ends up scrunching her hair back up into a ball until the next time she decides to tackle the challenge.

Now, our salon director Ingrid lives by the motto that no hair shall ever defeat her and defeat her it did not!

Here’s how our very own Ingrid conquered the what was once thought to be the impossible;

After partaking in a luxurious of Mizani Moisturfusion Milk Bath shampoo and conditioner, D’Tangle leave in conditioner by Mizani and Silken Seal by KeraCare were worked through Tamara’s hair evenly. The hair was then sectioned into four different sections and blow-dried using a dryer with a comb attachment to help bring the hair into a straighter stature. By bringing the hair into a straighter structure this would make it easier to straighten sleekly when it came to the pressing process.

Tamara’s hair was then sectioned again and pressed with wide ceramic Wet 2 Straight hair straighteners by Remington.  Mizani’s heat protector Gloss Veil was then applied. This product protects the hair as well as giving great shine while also helping the style to stay in place for last longer. After the pressing process was completed Ingrid then gave Tamaras hair a final boost and a healthy shine by spritzing KeraCare Gloss Sheen for the final look.

We all know that change and transformation is a great thing and here at Silk Trends we strive to help all our clients feel like any look is possible. Last week the beautiful Saffron visited Silk Trends.  It was Saffron’s birthday and so to celebrate the event she decided to be daring and go for the chop.

Saffron decided to go for a short, fierce Graduated cut, as she liked the short Rihannaesque look and felt that it would be easier to maintain what with it being shorter. 

Our very own Creative Director Ingrid got to work to make sure Saffron got exactly what she wanted and here’s how she did it;

First Ingrid shampooed and conditioned Saffron’s hair with Mizani Moisturfusion Milk Bath and Conditioner. D’Tangle leave in conditioner also by Mizani was also applied to prevent the hair from tangling while cutting. While the hair was wet Ingrid began to section the hair and cut it into short layers, gradually working her way up towards the crown of the head. This was then dried using a round brush technique for extra va va voom.

Lastly Mizani Gloss Veil was applied as a heat protector and the hair was then flat ironed with ceramic straighteners. The result is a sexy, short and managable hair to die for.

Like many people Saffron was tired of relaxing her hair and what with her having mixed textured hair this style was easier to maintain.

We love Saffron’s new look, and we hope you all do too.

To ensure our salon appointments run smoothly, we have introduced a deposit payment booking policy for securing appointments, and also introduced a cancellation policy.

Deposit Payment Booking and Cancellations Policy

We ask all clients to secure their hair service appointments booking with a deposit payment (£20 for normal hair services, £30 for Brazilian Keratin Treatment or Weave appointments).  This deposit will be taken off your final hair service bill at the end of your appointment.

If for any reason you have to cancel or change your appointment, please let us know at least 48 hours before your planned appointment and we will happily change your appointment (if new times are available) or cancel your appointment all together and refund your deposit payment to you.

Due to a number of clients consistently not showing up for their appointments without giving prior notice, this has resulted in other hair service appointments running behind as we wait for the person to arrive (assumed running late), and other clients being turned away unnecessarily when they could have offered an appointment.

We hope that you can understand that by giving us as much notice as possible, we can offer your unwanted appointment to another client on our waiting list, and it also helps everything run smoothly, professionally and on time at the salon. All we ask is that you give us a call on 0208 529 8000 at least 48 hours before to let us know you no longer require your appointment.

Unfortunately, any appointments that are cancelled with less than 48 hours notice or missed appointments (i.e. you simply do not show up for your appointment) will incur a fee (i.e. your deposit payment will be retained to cover the loss appointment).

We cater for all hair types so you must be accomplished at cutting, colouring, relaxing/perming and styling Afro, European and Mixed-textured hair .  Must have at least 2 years commercial experience.  Experience with weaving/hair extensions is a plus.  Experience with Brazilian Keratin Hair Systems is a plus, but not necessary as training will be provided.

You will be committed to providing high level customer service and strive to exceed our customers’ expectations.  You must be very pro-active in improving personal and technical skills and enthusiastic about continuous career develop.  You must be well presented, and understand that PUNCTUALITY is KEY to our business success.

PLEASE NOTE: This is part-time position (working 3 to 4 days a week for the right person).  This will definitely include working on a Saturday and at least two late evenings during the week).

QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:

Hair Stylists – Must have completed NVQ Level 2 Hairdressing, and currently studying towards NVQ Level 3 Hairdressing or willing to study towards NVQ Level 3 Hairdressing (e.g. attend college 1 day per week while working), and have minimum 2 years commercial experience.

** You will only be considered for a Stylist position if you have completed NVQ Level 2 Hairdressing Qualifcation and have the relevant level of experience. If you have recently completed NVQ Level 2 Hairdressing and have less than 2 years commercial experience or no commercial experience at all we may consider you for one of our APPRENTICE HAIRDRESSER positions.**

Must speak fluent English (whether as first or second language).

Silk Trends English Hair and Beauty Awards Official Press Release

An East London hair stylist is celebrating after reaching the finals of the prestigious English Hair and Beauty Awards. Ingrid Farrell, owner and Creative Director of Silk Trends Afro and European Hair Salon in Chingford, East London, is one of only 13 stylists in the country to be selected as a Finalist for Women’s Stylist of the Year at the English Hair and Beauty Awards 2012.

The aim of the English Hair and Beauty Awards is to acknowledge the hair stylists and beauticians across England who make their clients look and feel great and award them for their talent and hard work within the industry.

Since opening Silk Trends 5 years ago, Ingrid has not looked back. Having recently achieving a 4 star rating by the Good Salon Guide, completing her second photographic hair collection, and putting on an extravagant hair and fashion show in the local community, Ingrid is determined to raise the profile of Silk Trends, and raise the bar in providing high quality hairdressing services for all.

Ingrid expressed “she never imagined that she would be a contender up against some serious heavy weights in the hair industry, such likes of Anne Veck salon and Lisa Shepherd salon, when it came to being nominated for such a prestigious award like Women’s Stylist of the Year”.

The salon was nominated by Silk Trends clients and members of the public. When asked how she felt about being nominated for this award, Ingrid responded “I feel wonderful! Ingrid is hoping to take home the gold this year at the awards and is nothing short of grateful to her clients and her staff, which she strongly expresses, have been a huge support. “The clients have really supported us and this goes to show that all the hard work is paying off. I think it would be a breakthrough if the winner did not just specialise in one type of hair but catered for all hair types, like Silk Trends does. It’s all about crossing the boundaries and conventions of hairdressing, along with making way for the next generation of talent. I believe that no customer should be excluded just because of their hair type.” Inspiring words? We think so.

The English Hair and Beauty Awards will be held on 6th May in Manchester and is in partnership with the Katie Piper Foundation, who is dedicated to helping people who have been affected by burns and scars. The evening, which will recognise the very best in the English Hair and Beauty industry, will also be a fundraiser for the Foundation, and hopes to raise many thousands of pounds on the night. Ingrid also expressed strongly “by working with the Katie Piper foundation the English Hair and Beauty Awards will be sending a positive message that top class hair and beauty services should be accessible for all, without prejudice or discrimination.”

The Silk Trends team now have a nervous wait until 6th May when the grand final will be held at a glitzy awards event at the Midlands Hotel in Manchester, where they hope Ingrid will scoop the top prize.

Well we are looking for not 1 but 2 models for an upcoming exciting hair photoshoot for our entry into the prestigous Mizani Afro Catwalk Look Award -L’Oreal Colour Trophy 2012.

When it comes to healthy hair, it’s not just what you put on your tresses that count — it’s what you put in your body, too.

Ever heard of vitamin H? This is more usually known as Biotin or vitamin B7. All of the vitamins found in the B vitamin family are crucial to healthy hair growth (whether its afro hair, mixed race hair or european hair), and vitamin H is no different. Biotin aids in metabolizing the fats and protein crucial to enhancing and strengthening hair. Sufficient quantities of biotin have long been known as a key element in maintaining healthy hair and skin.

Symptoms, such as hair loss, skin irritation, fungus or eczema are frequent confirmation of a biotin deficiency.

Biotin may play a role in the prevention and/or treatment of other health conditions such as:

• Hair loss (alopecia)
• Intestinal imbalances, including inflammatory bowel syndrome, irritable bowel syndrome, Crohn’s disease, ulcerative colitis, and chronic diarrhea
• Neuromuscular-related conditions, including seizures, ataxias (movements characterized by lack of muscle coordination), and hypotonias (posture and movement characterized by lack of muscle tone)
• Skin conditions, including cradle cap in infants and seborrheic dermatitis in adults
• Pregnancy, as there is an increased demand for nutrients placed upon the mother by the growing fetus.

You’ll find Biotin naturally in nuts (such as almonds and walnuts), Vegetables (such as onions, cucumbers and cauliflower, carrots and Swiss chard), goat’s Milk and Cow’s milk, berries and fruits, Halibut, Salmon, and egg yolks.

Studies have shown that at least 100 milligrams of biotin may be able to prevent hair loss in men. Another interesting fact about Biotin is that it is thought that it may ward off grey hair, and we all want that .

On Sunday 11th September 2011, Silk Trends competed in the Adidas Women’s 5K Challenge and raised well needed funds in support of the ACLT (African Caribean Leukaemia Trust).

ACLT provide support for people in desperate need of a bone marrow donor. It’s shocking but it’s true, your chances of finding a lifesaving bone marrow donor ARE much more worse if you’re BLACK or Mixed Race…because there are 24 times more white people than black people on UK bone marrow registers.

We want to say a big thank you all our clients, friends and family who sponsored us for competing in the the Adidas Women’s 5K Challenge in September, which was completed by our Silk Trends co-owner and newbie runner Dionne, who had the mammouth task of getting herself fit in time for the race, and fianlly completed the race in 27:58 mins.

With your help we managed to raise an amazing £370, which will help the charity increase awareness of the need for Bone Marrow and Blood donors especially with the Black, Asia and Mixed Heritage communities.

Hey everyone it’s Simone and I have some exciting news to share with you all. I am very proud to announce that Silk Trends have made it into the Good Salon Guide! (I know, the title gave it away didn’t it?)  I can’t tell you how excited I am as well as everyone else who works here.

Silk Trends was visited and objectively assessed by professionally trained inspector against a set of strict criteria and minimum standards, and we were awarded a 4 Star rating for our salon . A 4 Star rating means that a salon has high standards with the latest techniques, excellent value for money.This gives consumers confidence in choosing a hair salon.

Hey there, it’s Simone here bringing you the low down on the latest technological breakthrough in hair straightening that all the celebrities are going crazy over – the Brazilian Keratin Treatment

So what’s all the fuss about the Brazilian Keratin Treatment. Well I found the background on this service fascinating because as the name states it did in fact originate in Brazil. It is amazing how far afield technology and hair care has come through the years.

I’ve been a blogger for the last four years, and have recently started working at Silk Trends as their friendly receptionist and resident blogger, and I’ll be keeping my eye on the scene so I can bring you what’s hot and what’s not in the world of hair.

ACLT provide support for people in desperate need of a bone marrow donor. Dionne says “I have never done anything like this in my life, so it’s a pretty daunting task.  The only time I have really done any running before is to catch a bus. lol.  I’ve started a bit of training, which has been tough going as a beginner, but hopefully I’ll be able to reach my goal of completing the race within 35 mins“.

We are aiming to raise £1000.00 or more for the ACLT this year.   If we reach £1000.00 before the race, Dionne has kindly agreed to a forfeit – To run the entire race in fancy dress .
